CATO 2 Launch Report

Saturday February 28, 1998
Clarks Falls, CT

We had a great day for our second club launch.  Sunny, warm (for February), and only a mild wind to start with (but gusty later in the day). Lud was sucessful in getting an FAA waiver to 5200 feet AMSL.

We had a total of 26 rocketeers, and logged 104 flights, burning 125 motors.Black powder clusters were flown by Jay Calvert, Richard Daines, and Mike Lane. One of these was my Spin Doctor 2, which had a great flight on two Estes D12s (photo #1). BP staged rockets were flown by Jay Calvert, Curtis Farrell, Mike Lane, and Dave Whiting. I sucessfully flew my Custom Equinox with a 3-engine booster stage (D12-0 core, twin C6-3 outboards) to a D12-7 sustainer.

There were 18 high power flights, all H and I motors. Two of these were sucessful level 1 certification flights: Walter Johnson of Davis Hobbies flew an extended LOC IV on an H180-6W, and I flew my NCR SA-14 Archer XL on the same engine (photo #2). Thanks to CTRA/NARCONN Prefect Curtis Farrell for handling the paperwork.

The top dozen hot shots (with total newton-seconds burned) were:

  1. John Brndiar (1059)
  2. Robert E. Lee (852)
  3. Rich Van Allen (700)
  4. Paul Welling (615)
  5. Curtis Farrell (585)
  6. Paul Ludwig (512)
  7. Mike Lane (421)
  8. Dave Sousa (384)
  9. Jay Calvert (380)
  10. Walter Johnson (366)
  11. Jeaux Robinson (355)
  12. Larry Hardin (341)
The total impulse of all motors burned was a very impressive 7280 N-S, equivalent to a mid "M" engine.

The Wellings (Paul, Aaron, Stefanie) flew 13 rockets, the Sousas (Dave & Eric) flew 11, and the Calverts (Jay & Cody) fired off 9, including Cody's Astrocam.  Sandy Alonzo finished the day with a 5-way Fat Boy drag race.
