CATO 30 Launch Report - 13 May 2000
Durham
Our return to Durham was marked by cloudy and somewhat dreary weather... however, there was virtually no wind! Almost all rockets were recovered, including two stage birds with "C" power all around. About 2 dozen flyers came out for the day... we logged 94 flights total. The only other issue was that the field was quite wet. One nice thing about Durham: the walk to the Porta Potty is one heck of a lot shorter than it is at Sterling! Overall we had a very successful day and many great flights were made despite the cloudy and wet conditions.
Alex Calvert's Long Shot on a C6-0 to C6-5 combo.
The upscale mosquito drag race: Paul Welling's on the left (F23 Fast Jack) and Sean Hogan's on the right (F24 White Lightning).
Sean Hogan's Ring Thing on an F12 Black Jack.
Les Kurz looks on as Joe Roberts points in the direction of his home planet.
Cody Calvert is awarded the NARTREK Bronze patch and three rocket kits by Les Kurz, as Paul Welling and Dave Sousa look on.
Jay Calvert's "Stratocam" (Astrocamera on a tube finned booster) on a D12-7.
Jason Lavigne prepares his THOY Falcon for a flight on G80 power.
Jason's THOY Falcon lifts off on its maiden voyage...
Chute is out, everything looks A-OK... a great flight for Jason Lavigne!

LAUNCH HIGHLIGHTS:
Today's launch had 21 registered flyers and a total of 94 flights. Joe Roberts had the most flights (11) followed closely by Jeanne Hogan (10). Joe Roberts burned the most propellant (281 Newton seconds). The Hogan family flew a total of 15 flights. Collectively we burned a total of 1786 Newton seconds, equal to a mid "K" motor.
Clusters: Joe Roberts and Les Kurz both flew LOC Starburst rockets; Joe used 2 D12-3 motors and Les used 2 E28 reloads. Unfortunately, only one of the E28s in Les' rocket ignited, resulting in a crash. The rocket will fly again after some repairs. Joe Roberts also flew his LOC Viper III on 3 D12-5 motors. A note to flyers of the Starburst: 2xD12 is the minimum power for this bird!
Classic Kits: Joe Roberts flew an original Estes WAC Corporal rocket on a Quest A6-4; this was the first flight for the rocket since about 1980. Les Kurz flew an Estes Alpha, and both Sean Hogan and Paul Welling flew upscales of the classic Estes Mosquito. Paul and Sean had a drag race with their Mosquitos... both rockets flew nice, although both Sean and Paul each claimed victory!
Helicopters / Gliders: Jeanne Hogan had some absolutely spectacular flights with her Flat Cat. Had there been a glider duration contest, Jeanne would have easily taken the prize! Jeanne also flew a Zoomie and an Estes ARV Condor.
Multi-Stage Flights: A number of people had multi stage birds in the air today. Paul Welling flew his Commanche III as a Commanche II (due to low clouds). Alex Calvert had two two stage flights with his Aztec and Longshot rockets. Jock Fullmer flew his Mongoose for a nice flight on C6-0 to C6-7 power. Also, Mike Zarick flew an Estes Scorpion on A8-0 to B6-7 power (where did you get those out of production motors Mike?)
Notable Flights: Jason Lavigne had a superb flight with his THOY Falcon on G80 power. This flight was basically a shakedown for his upcoming Level 1 attempt. Sean Hogan had three more cool flights of his Green Thing, this time pushing the power up to F24 on two flights. Todd Harrison flew his LOC IV on G80 power for a great flight.
Motor CATOs: None.
