CATO XXXIV Launch Report - 9 September 2000
Durham

What a great way to close out the summer season at Durham!  Beautiful weather, except for a very brief storm front that blew through in the early afternoon. The lack of wind before and after the storm kept the rockets on the field where they belong. We had a very competitive open glider duration contest, and a 6-way drag race between LOC IVs and other 4" diameter rockets  on G35 motors.  Nice turnout, and I think everyone had  fun.  Next month (Oct. 1) we return to our larger field in Sterling, CT.

There it goes, on a White Lightning motor.  Jason Foster's Binder Design Stealth is on the right.

Jason's Stealth performed a slow, low lob.  This rocket really needs more than a G64-4W.

Jason Foster's "Heads Up" on a G40W.  This rocket was flown at LDRS earlier this year and can be seen in the most recent Extreme Rocketry magazine.   To the right is John Poulin's LOC Forte (I think), Rick Polzello's PML 2" AMRAAM, and in the foreground is CATO co-Treasurer Jeanne Hogan's Quest Flat Cat.  Jeanne's glider ended up with 1st place in the open glider duration contest (1:28 on a C6-3).

Dave Sousa connects an extra set of leads for the 4" / G35 drag race.   The President's job is never done...
In the foreground is Dave's LOC IV, followed by Les Kurz's Thugster, Jay Calvert's NCR Archer, Jason Foster's Heads Up, and Todd Harrison's LOC IV.  The drag race was Todd's idea.  Good one Todd!

Alex Immerman strides up with an Aerotech Mantis Pad to accommodate his entry in the Drag Race.  The crowd watches in anticipation.

Alex connects his LOC IV, called "Big Emo".  Jason Foster helps out.  The three light colored specks on the grassy hill are kids that were "volunteered" to be altitude judges.  A good view from 800 feet away and 50 feet above the range.  All six rockets are now good to go!

They're off!  Jay's Archer is winning by "a head" (yuk, yuk).  Dave's LOC IV is 3rd off the pad, and eventually got points for the longest duration.  Les' Thugster was slow off the pad but gained the highest altitude (I think.  The judges weren't sure).  Todd's and Alex's LOC IVs didn't make it off the pads this time, but they duked it out with each other a few minutes later in "Round 2".  George Boulas' Vostok (cluster of D12-3 and two C6-3) and Jock Fullmer's Python (D12-5) are in the foreground.

Kevin Pina's PML Phobos.  The 2nd shot is a split second before the G35-4W blew forward, causing early ejection and melted Quantum tubing.

The only high power flight of the day.  CATO co-Treasurer Sean Hogan launches his upscale Mosquito on an H238T from the away cell.  This rocket (his level one project) uses an altimeter for dual recovery, not motor ejection.  It took 6 or 7 attempt to ignite the motor,  which  allowed the altimeter batteries to drain just a little too much...

Oops.  Uh...no visible damage from this angle.  Anyone got a shovel?  Sean gets the award for the lowest altitude.
