CATO L Launch Report - 8 Septmber
2001
Durham
Blast Off Sampler No. 1. First off we have Joe Roberts' original classic Centuri Orion on a C6-3; next is Jim Z's Holverson Silver Hawk entry in the glider duration contest. Third in line is Sean Hogan's F15 Tomcat (always a crowd pleaser); at the far right is Rick Polzello's Edmunds Dee Cee Thunder on one of the new Estes E9-4 black powder motors.
Blast Off Sampler No. 2. Rob Bazinet's Bullpuppy takes off in a hurry on a G motor; next is Len Haze's Quest DCX followed by Jim Z's Silver Hawk competing in the glider duration contest once again. At right is Tony DiPietro's Amraam on a F50-6T.
Blast Off Sampler No. 3. Ron Verilli's LOC Lil' Nuke takes off on a E11 motor, followed by Rock Polzello's LOC IV cluster modified rocket on a combination of 1 x F20-7 + 2 x F32-10 motors. Next we have ________'s _____ and Steve Bowen's Big Daddy on a D12-5.
Blast Off Sampler No. 4. First in line here is Sean Hogan's scratchbuilt Pumpkin Lofter on its maiden fliht using a G54W. Next is Rick Polzello's 2x Heatseaker flying on G80-7FWL motor followed by Melissa Guzowski's (?) Silver Comet on a D12-5. At right is Jim Z's modified Big Daddy on a cluster/airstart of F24 and 4xC6-0 power.
Blast Off Sampler No. 5. Starting off we have Eric Spain and Todd Harrison's Lance Beta on a F52 followed by Steve Guzowski's LOC on a G80-4T motor. At center is Rob Bazinet's Green Machine lifting off on F20 power followed by Susie Young's Draq Queen on a F25 motor. Finally, we have Paul Welling's Commanche 2.5 on D12 - D12 - C6 power (not surprisingly the top stage was not found)!
Len Haze (Estes Sky Slash on an A8-3) and Jeanne Hogan (Quest Flat Cat on a C6-3) make final adjustments to their entries in the glider duration contest; at right Steve Kossluk and son Kevin make connections to an ever popular Estes Fat Boy.
Alex Giosa displays his Aerotech Mirage before launch while Steve Polzello makes connections to his cluster modified LOC IV. At right Ron Verilli prepares his LOC Lil' Nuke for flight.
Timers and spectators track one of the many glider duration contest entries while trying not to be blinded by the Sun!
Here we have Susie Young with her Drag Queen rocket moments before liftoff followed by Alex Giosa's Firestreak (about to embark on its 20th flight). At right Steve Bowen makes final preparations to his Estes Big Daddy.
Steve Young displays his Initiator II ( replaces the one he lost at the last launch). At center is Joshua Drummond with his absolutely impressive Andromeda! There is no "digital trickery" in this image, the rocket really is that big! This rocket of course did not fly at Durham, Josh brought it down for display and inspection. At right Josh shows us the giant 75/5120 L motor casing that will be used to power this brute. This casing is bigger than most of the rockets that fly at Durham!
Jeannine Lawall prepares an Edmonds Cee-Cee (A8-3) in the glider duration contest while Jim Z shows us his modified Big Daddy (mods include 5 motor tubes and air start capability). Finally, Jay Calvert works on one of his many entries in the glider duration contest, a 2x Deltie on a D12-3.
Joe Roberts (LCO) and Len Haze awaiting the next rack of rockets; at right is Rick Polzello's very shiny Silver Comet, ready to fly on a new E9 motor.
Rick Polzello's LOC 'n Load flying on 1 x F20-7 + 2 x F32-10 power. This rocket is a scratch LOC IV clone with 5 MMTs and zipperless deployment. At center, Jeanne and Alysia Hogan make preparations to their clider contest entry while Jim Z does the same. Finally, Rick Polzello's 24mm Fat Boy on its last flight (Into the swamp on an E15-7).
Anyone wishing to contribute additional images please e-mail them to astroman@cshore.com (Joe Roberts). PLEASE limit messages e-mailed to me to no more than 3MB at a time!
LAUNCH HIGHLIGHTS and STATS:
Today we burned a total of 3740 Newton Seconds of AP and BP, equal to a mid L motor. With 126 flights, this means that the average rocket was powered by a mid E motor. We saw the first flights (at CATO) of the new Estes E9 black powder motors (Rick Polzello flew several). Definitely more than an Estes D and a nice motor for the Silver Comet!
Clusters: Rick Polzello flew his modified clone LOC'n Load on 1 x F20-7 + 2 x F32-10 power. Also, Jim Z flew his modified Big Daddy on a cluster/airstart of F24 and 4xC6-0 power. Unfortunately, things did not go as planned, it appears that one of the C motors caused a problem. The rocket will probably fly again. Both rockets appear in the photos above.
Classic Kits: Joe Roberts flew his original Centuri Orion (see photo panel number 1 above).
Multi-Stage Flights:Paul Welling flew his Commanche 2.5 on D12 - D12 - C6 power (see photo above). No ..
Certifications: No certifications today.
Motor CATOs: Brian DiBella
had a major CATO of an A3 motor (the rocket emmited a fireball and was
left in a lifeless form on the pad as a result). The rocket can likely
be repaired however.
