CATO LX Launch Report - 21 April 2002
Sterling, CT

Photos by Jay Calvert

CATO 60 was mostly sunny with clouds building throught the afternoon. The Northwest wind was a constant influence and a frequent nuisance. Gusts reached 15-20 mph on occasion. We flew a whole bunch of contests today. NAR C parachute duration, D streamer duration and B helicopter duration were the contests du jour.  Today we had 26 fliers make 84 flights. We burned a total of 9,159 Ns of propellant. This is equivalent to a nearly full "M" motor.

Rob Bazinet's EZI-65 pulsates skyward on a Hypertek J250. The rocket recovered very close by. Too close for Mike Casey's truck. That's his mom inside! There was no damage and everyone had a good laugh.

Rick Polzello's Endeavor lifts off from the away pads on a Cesaroni I285 on it's way to 2,281 feet and a nice dual deployment recovery less than 100 feet from the pad. Dual deployment is the way to go when the winds of Sterling are blowing! Jason Hick's EZ-I65 boosts on Cesaroni H153. Finally, Alex Immerman's Bullpuppy rips away on a G35W.

Mark Masullo's Estes Heatseeker takes off on an ill fated flight on an A8. The rocket went unstable about 10 feet off the pad and crashed. Len Haze's Estes Plan Scott B can be seen at center boosting on a B6-0 while ??'s ?? waits it's turn. After Len's Scott B staged to a B6-6 and went unstable, Len was heard saying "That didn't work right!". At right, Alex Giosa's PML 1/4 Patriot zips skyward on an Aerotech G80T.

Rob Bazinet's LOC Magnum roars off the rail on a Kosdon K700. This motor was very loud and the echo could be heard bouncing off the area woods. The flight was fast and had a picture perfect dual deployment recovery with a reported altitude of 2,554' and landing near the launch area.

Here Rick Polzello's "Scuderia" almost clears the rail on an Aerotech J415W. This stretched LOC Magnum is painted to match the Scuderia Ferrari's formula 1 race team. The red has been matched to the Ferrari color, but the vinyl sponsor logos have yet to be applied. (Much thanks to Advanced Graphics of Stratford) The rocket had a nearly perfect dual deployment flight to 2,381 feet. You've gotta love the smoke & flame of large White Lightning motors.

LAUNCH HIGHLIGHTS and STATS:

Frequent Flyers: Jay Calvert flew 8 flights (7 contest) while Len Haze managed 7. Ulf Jonsson arrived late but still flew 5 times as did Alex Immerman and Brian Bassett.

Clusters: Only Josh Drummond flew a cluster today. His Sky Digger burned a Cesaroni I357 and a pair of G35W's.

Classic Kits:

Multi-Stage Flights: Only Len Haze tempted the fates of the wind with a multistage flight. His Estes Plan Scott B flew a B6-0 to B6-6 combo for a slightly less than perfect flight.

Notable Flights: Rob Bazinet and John Poulin both had Hypertek powered rockets buzzing off of John's nice custom rail set-up. Rob flew an EZI -65 on a J250 and John flew his NOS Cruiser on a J330. Rob also flew his Magnum on a Kosdon K700 for an impressive and very LOUD display of APCP power. Rick Polzello's "Scuderia" burned a J415W during another flight of a large rocket off the rail. Jay Calvert had a very long helicopter duration flight go for naught when the launch wires to the Estes pads became crossed. No one timed what was a superb flight of his RotaRoc into the woods. Jay also staged a candy drop with his Ariel. 30 candy bars were ejected at 900 feet.

Motor CATOs: Happily, none.

Contests: Today's NAR Open Meet featured three events: B Helicopter Duration, C Parachute Duration, and D Streamer Duration.  Prizes were awarded for the top place in each event.  A and T Divisions were combined for BHD.  A and B Divisions were combined, and C and T Divisions wee combined in CPD and DSD.
