CATO LXII Launch Report - 25 May 2002
Durham, CT

Today marked the annual return of CATO to the Durham field, and the debut of the new and improved CATO equipment trailer.  CATO 62 was bright and sunny all day, with temps getting up into the 60s.  A moderate northeast wind in the morning gave way to a couple of hours of near calm in the early afternoon.  By mid afternoon we had a moderate breeze out of the south.  We hosted a NAR Open Meet  with three events:  A Boost Glider, 1/4A Super-Roc Duration, and C Super-Roc Duration. Today we had 20 flyers make 95 flights and burned 2,397 Ns of propellant.

Rick Polzello's Apogee Aspire awaits liftoff on an Apogee E6. Jeff Thomas' Flying Candy Cane of Death can be see at center. It had it's best flight to date on an E30T. At right a black powder 3FN design takes off while Tony Cote's Sith Fighter and Jay Calvert's A-BG entry (a QCR Never Loop I) wait their turn.

A full rack. From left to right. Jason Hick's Graduator, Jeff Thomas's Red Crayon, Tony Cote's Estes Astrocam, Josh Drummond's Estes Snitch saucer (on a D21T - wow!), Brad Dibble's Aerotech Arreaux, Rick Polzello's CSRD entry, One of Jay Calvert's CSRD entries, ___'s _____, Spencer Poulin's Saturn's Ring, Rick Defonce's Polaris, and Derek Buchard's Estes Eliminator.

1) Ulf Jonsson's 1st ABG entry.  The shock cord hooked on the tail of the glider at ejection.  Normally a "Red Baron" ruins the glide and causes a DQ, but in this case Ulf got a graceful 40 second glide and a qualified flight.
2) Rick Polzello's Hawk missile launching on a D12.
3) Rick's CSRD entry boosting on an Apogee C4-6 composite motor.  To the right is Jay Calvert's 1st CSRD entry.  It's headed for Crimp City on a C6-5 (Fortunately he had a backup model).
4) Brad Dibble's Aerotech Arreaux on an E30 Blue Thunder motor.

Ulf Jonsson is cursing the wind while trying to get his own Neverloop A-boost glider, and Eric Jonsson's and Troy Heidtmann's Deltie gliders to stay put on the pads.

1) Josh Drummond's Stretched Black Spike boosting on a G80T.
2) Tony Cote's Estes Fire Flash launching on a C6.
3) John Lombardi's Edmond's CiCi start's it's run up the rod.  To the right are two C super-rocs.  Les Kurz' is in the tower behind Blue 3, and Jay Calvert's backup bird (a very stretched Estes Monarch) is on Blue 5.  Rick Defonce's Polaris is between them.

1) The wrong way to recover a SuperRoc (Les' separation and lawn dart).
2) The right way (Jay's 72 second drift that landed on the road immediately behind the LCO. It seems that shirts laundered professionally really do make the difference.
3) Josh Drummond's orange Quasar is seen burning five D12 motors on it's way to a very nice flight.

It goes up. It ejects very early. It blows flames out of both ends. It rests in peace. Rick Polzello had a G35W cato in his Eliminator causing a nasty zipper and major internal destruction.

1) Tony Cote and his Silverhawk glider (on Red 3).  Brad Dibble's C SuperRoc in on Red 1, and Ulf Jonsson's A Boost Glider on Red 5.
2) Rick and what's left of his NCR Eliminator after the cato.
3) Jeff Thomas' Black Hole cruising off to meet it's doom on a G40 White Lightning motor.

Jeff Thomas with the remains of his "Black Hole". Rod angle, large fin area, a G40-7W, and the wind conspired to bring this rocket in ballistic. Interesting NC damage.

The crew packs the gear into the new CATO trailer.  A special thanks to Dave, John, Sean, and all the other CATO members that contributed to its construction!

LAUNCH HIGHLIGHTS and STATS:

Frequent Flyers: Tony Cote led all flyers with 12 flights. A pair of Rick's (Polzello and Defonce) each flew 8 times. Les Kurz, Jay Calvert, and Brad Dibble all made 7.

Clusters: Brad Dibble flew his Astron Rager on a trio of B6 motors. Josh Drummond flew his Quasar twice. Once on 5 D12's and once on 3 E9's. Jason Hicks flew his 1st composite cluster in his Viper IV with a pair of E30's. Jeff Thomas flew his Maxi Astron Cobra on 4 B6's.

Multi-Stage Flights: Derek Buchard flew his Mongoose twice . Once on a B6/A8 combo and once on a C6/C6 combo. Jay Calvert flew his Comanche Farside three stager on a B6/C6/C6.

Classic Kits: None this time.

Motor CATOs: Rick Polzello's Eliminator was destroyed in a fashion that is familiar to Rick. An Aerotech G35W ejected very early and proceeded to make thrust from both ends. The early ejection caused a nasty zipper and the forward thrust completely consumed the MMT and gutted the lower BT. A nice flame ball was seen coming from the top of the BT. Very reminiscent of the failure he experienced in his LOC IV "cubed".

Other Notable Flights: Jeff Thomas has finally worked out the kinks of the Flying Candy Cane of Death. It had a nice flight on an E30. Now if only Jeff can find a way to install a recovery device....

Contests: Today's NAR Open Meet featured three events: A Boost Glider, 1/4A Super-Roc Duration, and C Super-Roc Duration.  Prizes were awarded for the top place in each event.  A and C Divisions were combined for the two super-roc events, and separate for ABG.
