CATO LXIV Launch Report - 13 July 2002
Durham, CT
CATO 64 was clear, sunny, warm and breezy all day. The recently mowed grass made for a nice launch field. We hosted several NAR contests. C Streamer Duration, A Streamer Duration, and C Rocket Glider Duration were flown. Today we had 33 flyers make 124 flights and burned 2,485 Ns of propellant.

A mowed field and a beautiful day made for a great launch.

Busy Pads! Lots of familiar faces along with new ones turned out to enjoy the great weather and burn some propellant.

2. Rick Polzello's LOC 'n' Load on an F20W and twin F21Ws.
3. Jason Hicks' "Super LOC IV" on a G80T.

Someone's orange rocket boosts on BP power while "Caro Mio" with it's repaired fin waits. The rocket didn't make it off the pads today. Judging by the fin damage, maybe it's a good thing. At right, Justin Chapman's Comanche III starts off on an ill fated flight. The second stage failed to light and the rocket sampled some of the Durham earth.

First, Josh Drummond's "Mini Sky Digger" soars upward an an Aerotech F20W. The smoke from several F20s seemed a little darker than usual. 2nd, Jason Hicks Thug also flies on an F20W. At right is Justin Chapman's Initiator ripping towards the clouds on a G80T.

Jarod Drummond's green "Fishy Rock 3" boosts on a G80T while Jason Hicks "Super LOC IV" and Rick Defonce's X181 wait. At center, the Super LOC IV lifts off on a G80T. At right, an F24W pushes the X181 up and off the pad.

First, Chris Massulo's original Estes Maxi V-2 heads off the 3/16 rods on a D12-3 for a low but good flight. At right, Ron Verrilli's Gecko SA-8 finally lifts off on an E18. Ron made at least 5 attempts to light the motor and was finally successful with a borrowed Magnalite igniter. They work every time.

Paired For Flight. Mike Casey's "1/2 Spike" is about a nose cone ahead of Justin Chapman's "Aura" in this drag race. Mike's rocket flew on a new Aerotech F21-4W while Jason's burned a G80-4T. The rockets stayed almost as close as this for the whole flight. They were both recovered on the field very near each other.

The Happy: Chris Masullo Jr. poses with his original Der Red Max.
&
The Sad: Rick Defonce poses with his X181 after it's crash on an F24W. The delay was a little long and the rocket ejected while sticking out of the field.

LAUNCH HIGHLIGHTS and STATS:
Frequent Flyers: Spencer Poulin led all flyers with 9 flights. Rick Defonce managed 8 while Jeff Thomas, Spencer Martin, Larry Hardin, Tony Cote, and Jay Calvert all made 6.
Clusters: Rick Polzello flew LOC 'n Load on a pair of F21W outboards with a central F20W for nice loud boost. Spencer Poulin made a NarTrek flight with his Silver Tri-Dagger burning a pair of 1/4A3s and an A3. Don Stevens flew "Who Knows" on a clustered multistage flight. The booster had a B6-0 and a pair of A8-3's staging to a B6-6. The rocket worked perfectly.
Multi-Stage Flights: Justin Chapman flew his Comanche III on a D12 to C6 to C6 combination, but the second stage failed to light and the rocket crashed hard. Zack Lau flew his Hercules on a B6 to A8. Don Stevens flew his clustered and staged "Who Knows". See the description in clusters above.
Classic Kits: Chris Masullo flew an original Maxi V-2 on a D12-3. Chris also took his original Der Red Max for a couple of flights on B motors.
Motor CATOs: None!
Other Notable Flights:
Contests: Today's contest was an NAR-sanctioned Open Meet with three events: A Steamer Duration, C Streamer Duration, and C Rocket Glider (Multi-Round).
