It was COLD again this month, perhaps the chilliest CATO launch to date. It was 1 degree F when the setup crew arrived, and only made in into the mid teens by late afternoon. Digital cameras did not fare well, so there are fewer photos than usual. We hosted our first NAR open meet of 2003, with three events: 1/4A Boost Glider, A Helicopter Duration, and E Streamer Duration. Two Team America Rocketry Challenge teams attempted qualification flights. 18 flyers made 58 flights and burned 2,152 Ns of total impulse equal to a 68% "K" motor.
1) Don Steven's Super Chicken, ready to go.
2) Boosting on a H128 White Lighting motor. 5...4...3...2...1...CLUCK!
3) Dual recovery on the field...great flight!
Jay Calvert loads his 2/3 scale Deltie glider with a 1/4A3-3T, and looks towards a cool blue and red space-plane-thingy. Lift off on a black powder motor.
Strike a pose!
1) LCO and CATO Prefect John Poulin. Peter and Jeannine Lawall looking skyward.
2) NAR Section Advisor and Contest Director Les Kurz, looking skyward.
3) CATO President Jay Calvert, you guessed it, looking skyward.
LCO and CATO Treasurer Sean Hogan, and Zachary Lau. Zach took first place in both 1/4A BG and ESD.
Lift off of one of Peter Lawall's altimeter test vehicles on an Estes B motor. The new PerfectFlite altimeter will be extremely tiny and will record altitude data only (no deployment charges).

LOT-O-WIRES! Todd Harrison's "Unfinished Business" TARC entry flies on a staged cluster of three D12s and two C6s with a D12. At right, Les Kurz poses with his LOC Legacy. It flew on a G80FWL and an F23FJ today

Brrrr. Jeannine Lawall preps "Mach or Bust" for a flight on a G80-10T. It carried Peter's newest super-mini altimeter for a test flight. At right, Peter makes the connections for a real neck-snapping flight!

Peter DiPaolo's Fat Man boosts on a C6 from Red-2 while someon'e ESD entry waits for a turn on Red-1. Larry Hardin and Todd Harrison prepare Larry's Mini BBX for a flight on a H128W. Liftoff!

1) Jay Calvert's Mach Buster takes to the sky on an Estes E9.
2) Zack Lau's ESD-1 on an E9-8.
3) John Poulin's SAAB RBOSA rips on an Aerotech I284W.
4) It's blue, it's got wings, it's going up on a black powder motor.
5) Don Steven's Super Chicken.
LAUNCH HIGHLIGHTS and STATS:
Certifications: None today.
Frequent Flyers: Jay Calvert and Ulf Jonsson both flew 8 times today. Zack Lau and Les Kurz each made 6.
Clusters: Todd Harrison flew "Unfinished Business 2" on a staged cluster of six BP motors. Ryan Torello flew "Hitoma 2" on 3 D12's to an E9. Bill Dauphin flew his unamed rocket on a cluster of three C6s.
Multi-Stage Flights: Todd Harrison's and Ryan Torello's flights were TARC entries and flew staged as well as clustered.
Classic Kits: None today.
Motor CATOs: Les Kurz had bad luck with Estes E9 motors. Two out of two cato'ed with a loud pop and a ball of flame.
Other Notable Flights: Peter Lawall made several test flights with his newest super-mini altimeter. It even flew once on a G80-10T ina Mach Buster rocket! John Poulin's SAAB was quite impressive on an I284W. John easily captured the "Hot Shot" title with this one flight.
Contests: Today's NAR-sanctioned open meet was CATO72. Events were 1/4A Boost Glider, A Helicopter Duration, and E Streamer Duration.
