CATO LXXVI Launch Report - 18 May 2003
Sterling, CT

It was nearly perfect today at the Sterling field.  It reached 72 F, the skies were blue, the winds ranged from 4 - 10 mph and most importantly, they were from the East. This allowed for easy recovery of almost everything flown.  We hosted a NAR open meet, with three events: B Parachute Duration (MultiRound), C SuperRoc Duration and F Dual Egg Loft Duration.   45 flyers made 136 flights and burned 11,380 Ns of total impulse equal to a baby "N" motor.

Shadow Technology. CATO President, Jay Calvert loads Shadow onto an away pad with the help of John Poulin. It's hard to fathom, but Jay will be moving to Kalamazoo, Michigan later this summer to pursue his career with Pfizer. He will leave some very large shoes to fill. Shadow Technology flew on a central Cesaroni J400 Smokey Sam and airstarted four (4) Ellis Mountain G35s and two (2) G64Ws. Shadow can be seen heading off for Kalamazoo after the airstarts. The rocket was recovered on the field.

Rick Polzello's LOC 'n Load boosts skyward on an Aerotech H97J. Todd Harrison's "2-24" lifts off pad 5 on a pair of Estes E9's. One of the motors decided to cato at about 60 feet. Off blue pad 1, David Lewis' "Aurora" glider lifts off on one of two good flights today.

Len Haze's yellow Bid Daddy starts one of it's two flights. It's clustered and flew on pairs of E9s and D12s. At right, the E9 in Len Haze's upscale Mosquito 4X just ignites. Jeff Thomas' "Flying Pepermint Stick" can be seen behind waiting to fly on an F21.

Todd Harrison inspects the remnants of "2-24". It's nice to see he can still manage a smile. Ross Tracey stands proudly with his immaculately painted Ariel. The paint absolutely glows. On the right, Brad Dibble poses with a Sudden Rush before his successful L1 cert attempt.

The J350W Boys. Bill Dauphin preps his Warlok EXP on away pad 6 while Dane Hauck arms the electronics on his Syonic before his L2 cert attempt. Below each rocket lifts off on Aerotech J350W power. Bottom right, successful recovery on the field. Congratulations on L2 Dane!

2)  Len Haze's Yellow Daddy on a pair of E9s.
3)  Jay Calvert's C Super Roc entry in a tree directly over Rte. 49.  The rocket is intact and the motor is retained.  Rule 10.4 says it's a qualified flight, and the 158 second duration was good enough for 1st place.

1)  Davis Lewis' Aspire screams off on an Econojet F20W. Amazingly, the rocket did not exceed the speed of balsa and stayed together.
2)  George Boulas' scale Nike Hercules on a pair of G35 White Lightning motors.  The sustainer on this 2-stager contained a D12.
