CATO LXXX Launch Report - 6 September 2003
Durham, CT

It was an incredible day at Durham.  Temperatures were in the lower 70's and the skies were blue! Gentle winds were between 5 and 9 m.p.h. for most of the day without noticable gusts. Three NAR sactioned contests were flown. B Flexi Duration, B Helicopter Duration, and A Rocket Glider Duration. 14 flyers made 85 flights and burned 1,824 Ns of total impulse.

Rick Polzello's LOC IV look alike, "LOC 'n Load" flew twice today. Both times the rocket was loaded with a G35W and two F24Ws. On the 1st flight, the two F24Ws failed to light due to some old and humidity compromised igniters. The rocket flew safely, but the 7 second delay was too long for the non-optimal flight. The zipperless design worked flawlessly as the chute opened when the rocket was only 40 feet from the ground and really hauling. The 2nd flight went as planned with only one of the F24Ws starting a little late. At right, Ron Verrilli's "Darth Vader" Amraam boosts on an Aerotech F37W. This motor fits the 29-100 case.

John Rowan-Stern's "ATM" (Alien Troop Mover) heads skyward on one of the new Estes C11 black powder motors while Jim Oslander's Code Red waits on Blue #1. Jim's Blue Ninja waits on Blue #4 while Jim Oslander's Big Daddy lifts off on Estes E9 power. Ron Verrilli's Gecko can be seen at right starting its run up the rod also on an E9. Rick Polzello's "LOC 'n Load" and someone's red & black rocket can also be seen the image.

Ron Verrilli poses with "Fin Tab" . This rocket has agressivly angled tabs on the bottom of each fin to create rotation during liftoff. They sure do work as the rocket spins incredibly fast whenever it flys. In the center photo, "Fin Tab" toasts the igniter clips while boosting on an Aerotech G54W. At right, CATO President Sean Hogan toasts a marshmallow on his grill to complete lunch.

Sarah & Dean Kavalkovich's "Bodacious" cranks skyward on a pair of C6 motors. "Bodacious" flew on this motor combination three times today. At right Sarah, Dean & friends can be seen making the long walk back from the recovery of "Bodacious" near the swamp. With today's light winds, only one rocket was fed to the swamp.

An unidentified rocket lifts off. A cool red glider boosts while a B Helicopter entry, John Rowan-Stern's Honest John, and Max Holl's "Twister' wait. There goes John's Honest John on C6 power.

John Rowan-Stern's "Persius" tries to leave the camera frame on a pair of Estes D12s. This rocket flew nicely on this combination for some big air twice today. An unidentified rocket lights black powder while Jim Oslader's Big Daddy waits.

Off to the races! Three Big Daddys start off in a drag race. Max Holl's & Jim Oslander's rockets are hot & smoking., but Al Gloer's "Chrome Daddy" never had joy. Max & Jim are at it again.
